Inspiring people to write their book is one part of my job I love the most. Having written sixteen books in various genres, I’ve experienced the sheer pride and joy of holding a finished book in my hands.
I understand that fear is a substantial block for many new writers, but I’ve found an exercise that will motivate even the most reluctant writer to pick up their pen.
Are you brave enough? Then keep reading…
When I gave a personal development talk several years ago, I did an exercise that shocked many of the ladies sat in the audience. It’s an eye-opener and a simple visualisation of how we shouldn’t wait for the right time before we follow our dreams or action our goals.
The ribbon of life exercise
Let me walk you through the process:
First, a question. What is the estimated lifespan of an individual?
When I asked the ladies in the audience this question, they decided upon 80 years. The actual figure is 79, so they were pretty close. We’re going to work with 80 for round figures.
Without even thinking about work, weekends, family time, eating, and holidays I’m left with 5cms! Switch that back into years, and I’ve got five years to accomplish my goals.
Are you scared yet?
We based this exercise on the fact that I live to be 80 years old – I’m hoping to stick around for a lot longer than that! However, anyone who has lost a loved one, especially someone who was young and had their entire life ahead of them, will understand that the final destination isn’t set in stone.
In truth, we don’t know how much time we have left.
If you do this exercise for yourself, I’d recommend keeping the small portion of ribbon you have left to act as a daily reminder. Life is getting shorter and today is the day to activate your dreams, accomplish your goals and live your life to the full.
